  • "I'm Lessie, born 1968 and named after my paternal grandmother. My middle name (Zo?) is from my maternal grandmother. The first-born female of the first-born females in my family are named in such a way... goes all the way back to Scotland, pre 1500's. Sadly, no more Lessies will follow me as I only birthed sons. Maybe a grandchild or great-grandchild will pick up the name. As I was told, Lessie is the highland form of Lassie - both meaning "young girl". Also used by the "black irish" for firstborns who are female as they desired sons. Coming from a mix of Irish & Scot, I got the name via my father's line. I use "Less" or "Les" a lot. I hated my name as a child, was teased relentless at "Messy Lessie", Lesbo, or Lassie (after the dog). I swore I would change my name to Lisa once I could, but have grown rather fond of it and its uniqueness. I personally don't know any other Lessie except for whom I'm named for - although I've met quite a few in Florida, Georgia and Lousianna. The clan calls me "Little Lessie" as my Grandmother was the matriarch - rest her soul." Dec. 27, 2016: Report as inappropriate

But I cannot really understand why people keep on calling me Leslie, Lesi, Lizi, LessiA, Alicia... I love my name, and is not usual at all in Venezuela. We have a nice name... it sound like "the eyes" in french... btw... people tends to remember "our" name when they think about "Monsieur" in french... people always ask me if I am french... but this name is not common in France (funny). The venezuelan Lessiż :)" Mar. 8, 2009: Report as inappropriate

After six boys, Arnold Francis, Nolan Lester, Roland Francis, and Lester Francis Jr, I think my mother put a stop of it. My mother always told me I was to have been named Regina for her, but a cousin liked and 'pinched' the name for her baby two weeks before I arrived. My mother gave into my father and Lessie I was named. When people mispronounce my name I tell them 'No, tis Lessie, Lassie with an e.' Like many, I love my name. Few have it." I was born in 1963 and my mother named me after one of my uncles girlfriends, she just loved the name. I've met 3 Lessie's in my life and they were all very sweet, intelligent and great ladies! I was born into a family with very odd names so growing up with this name was no big deal, just frustrating because it's so simple how could anyone mess it up?" • "I was surprised to find there were so many people named Lessie, and I'm sure there are many more. I was born on December 22, 1937, and named Lessie after my mother, who just turned 95 on November 9, 2011. She told me the story of her parents paying a visit to relatives who had a new set of twins, so they could see the twins and also show her (my mother) off to the relatives. They prided themselves on choosing a name they felt no one else would have. When they arrived at the home of their relatives, the new mother proudly stepped up and said, "These are our new twins, (boy and girl) Jessie Lawrence and Lessie Florence!" Anyway, I'm proud of my name, but at one point I was almost ready to have it legally changed. When People would ask my name, I would tell them, and actually spell it out for them, and they would still call me Leslie. It was rather frustrating. Finally, I started telling them, "It sounds like Jessie, but start it with an L instead of a J." Then they would say, "Oh, LESSIE!" After that, I don't seem to have any trouble." The Leslies that I'd met in the pass were very kind. there is a para educator at my school that looks out for me. She was born in 1964. At least she drives the speed limit! She doesn't do 95 in a 55 speed zone like other maniacs. Leslie is one of my favorite names. It was popular around the sixties and seventies. All though in the state of Texas, it was popular from the sixties to the present. The yungest Leslie I know was born around 1970. But That was about 6 years ago when I knew her. She was a teacher at my school. Love the name!" Oct. 27, 2008: Report as inappropriate

  • "I am named Lessie Lee, born 1948. My mother is Lessie Fay, born in 1929. I had a lot of trouble in my small school with being called Lassie after the tv dog. But I know I have a friend when they can pronounce my name correctly and continue to do so when we meet. My maternal grandmother couldn't rememer where she got the name for my mom but she had 14 so she probably ran out of names..I knew a Lessie in Dallas, she was a boyfriends mother.. that was the first one I had heard of alive. The rest were old and in the obituary section of the newspaper" Jul. 7, 2007: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Lessie and I was born in 1951 - so happy belated to Lessie that posted on 22 Jan 07. I was named after my aunt Lessie and ironically my cousin name is also Lessie. It was always a "which one - Lessie" do you want when we were in the same place; and that created a laugh because all of our middle initials are the same. My aunt was Lessie (1), my cousin (2) and me (3). Sure everyone like to spell and pronounce my name as Leslie." Apr. 29, 2007: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Lessie. I was named after my father's mother. In doing family history, I've discovered that this chart is right on the money. There were quite a few Lessies during the 1800s! Surprised me. I've grown up being the only one named that -- and everyone asking me if it is a nickname. (I say, it's like Jessie. That helps a lot. Otherwise people never "get" it and call me a number of strange things, including Leslie, until they start avoiding using my name! :) ) Recently, I met a lady named Lessie at the post office and one at the ROD. The lady at the post office (who is around my age) and I laugh about it -- because we never meet anyone with our name. She was named after a family member too. Until I met her, I had only seen the name in obituaries. :)" Apr. 13, 2007: Report as inappropriate
